History
2008
Last year, EMBA had established an effective dialogue and process with the City of Edmonton in order to continue the sanctioned maintenance of trails.During the year, four “trail days” were held, including two in Mill Creek Ravine and one in Terwillegar Park.
EMBA’s garnered prominent recognition for its efforts in the community, receiving a Mountain Equipment Co-op Urban Sustainability Grant as well as a GARMIN trail mapping GPS donated by Cycles Lambert.
2007
In the early months of the year, EMBA formed its board of directors and began planning its future.
In May 2007, Dave Whitten and a group of volunteers began construction of a new trail in Strathcona Science Park. The trail would be used for the upcoming Western Canada Summer Games. An Alberta Cup race was held on that trail in May 2007. EMBA and Strathcona County worked together to obtain approval from the land owner, Alberta Tourism, to conserve and maintain the trail, as it was originally intended to be used only for the Western Canada Summer Games. However, it is still being used today and ongoing maintenance is required to keep the trail from eroding.
2006
By April 2006, EMBA began working with the City of Edmonton on proposed plans for enhancing the river valley for mountain bikers.
At an EMBA meeting in June 2006, the role of EMBA in the community was solidified and the decision was made to register EMBA register as a non-profit society.
2005
EMBA’s roots lay in a trail building school held on May 28 and 29, 2005. The Alberta Bicycle Association arranged for a two-day school and hands-on trail building experience in Mill Creek Ravine. The school was run by the International Mountain Bicycling Association Trail Care Crew and was supported by the City of Edmonton. The trail building school involved four classroom hours, followed by a day and a half of trail building to replace an eroded section of trail in Mill Creek Ravine. Approximately 200 meters of trail were built by the nearly 20 individuals who participated in the school.
The trail building school participants did not stop at just building that small section of trail. Inspired by the need for ongoing trail development and maintenance, the EMBA was formed, led by Doug Gleddie.
In August 2005, the first official EMBA took place, and EMBA’s name, vision, mission, and values were established.
In September 2005, EMBA met with the City of Edmonton to identify partnerships and potential opportunities for cooperation.
